The West Somerset coastline near Tilbury Farm offers fossil-hunting, dramatic scenery and coastal walks. Our nearest beaches are:
Kilve – mostly rocky shoreline with plenty of rockpools to explore towards low tide. The cliffs here are formed from oil-rich shale and layers of yellow, brown blue lias in which fossils can be found. Lovely grassy picnic area, coastal footpath and tea room.
Dunster, Blue Anchor, Minehead all offer sandy stretches. Travel by train, promenade, eat fish & chips.
Watchet and Minehead both have pretty historic harbours and quaint streets to explore. Watchet has a busy art scene. www.containsart.co.uk Pebbles Tavern www.pebblestavern.co.uk is a very friendly venue specialising in real cider.
Further west, Lee Bay is our favourite hidden beach on Exmoor – and with a café too. www.leebay.co.uk
Even further afield (go for the day) the south coast offers Lyme Regis, Beer and Branscombe whilst Devon offers Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands.
